Continuing- care retirement

Continuing-care retirement communities (CCRCs) include several types of housing options for older people. CCRCs vary, but one might have senior apartments, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes all on the same property. Residents can move from one area to another as their needs change. When a senior’s health state changes, CCRCs aim to provide them with the appropriate degree of care throughout a continuum, from independent living to assisted living to skilled nursing care, all without requiring them to leave the retirement community.

These communities are known as the “one-stop shopping” of the retirement industry because they offer different levels of care in one location, ensuring that your loved one will be looked after till the end of their life. They are therefore a wise alternative for single individuals and for couples who want to live close to one another in case one gets sick and needs more care than the other.

CCRCs typically provide three different types of contracts, and based on the contract type, it is easy to tell a CCRC from a life care community.

  1. Type A contracts provide extensive or full life care services.
  2. Type B contracts provide modified or continuing care services.
  3. Type C contracts are fee-for-service arrangements that provide continuing care services.
